Before the financial takeover, Champions League appearances and big-money signings, Manchester City were playing second-division football in 2002. Today, they are valued as the richest football club in the world and have become regulars in European competitions. Although they were founded in 1880, it would not be until 14 years later that they would adopt the name Manchester City.
In 2011/12, they finally ended their arduous wait for a Premier League title by claiming the prestigious silverware thus ending a 44-year drought. Since the arrival of manager Pep Guardiola, the Citizens became the first English club to complete the domestic Treble and broke the record for most points (100) in a single Premier League campaign in 2018. Playing their home games at the Etihad Stadium, they also have a long-established rivalry with neighbours Manchester United which has intensified over the years since City have been in the top-flight.
